The Trifid Nebula is an example of beauty at its finest. The red, blue, and dark dust lanes found in this nebula 5,000 light years from Earth is an example of a reflection, emission, and a dark nebula. The red colors seen here are the result of ionized hydrogen gas, and the dust filaments (dark regions) that are found throughout this nebula is most likely the result of a supernova explosion, releasing the heavy elements created within a massive star, or perhaps multiple massive stars that have exploded within the Trifid Nebula. The blue colors seen here are the result of reflected light coming from stars that are too far away from this region to ionize the gases. Blue is a common color found in scattered light. Also known as M20, this nebula is about 50 light years in diameter and can be found in the constellation Sagittarius.
