Bill Nye: Evolution denying congressman ‘unqualified’
October 8th, 2012 by Michael Stone
Bill Nye says evolution denying Republican Rep. Paul Broun is “unqualified to make decisions about science, space, and technology.” Nye also warns that Broun’s rejection of evolution as accepted science is “not in the national interest.”
Nye was responding to reports surfacing this weekend about disturbing remarks made by Rep. Broun, a Christian extremist, who is at once both a young earth creationist and a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
In an alarming display of willful ignorance, Republican Rep. Paul Broun made the claim that evolution, embryology, and the big bang theory are all “lies straight from the pit of hell.” Broun also claims that the Earth is “about 9,000 years old” and that “it was created in six days as we know them,” because “that’s what the Bible says.”
In response to Broun’s ignorant and dangerous remarks, Bill Nye sent the following statement to Huffington Post via email:
“Since the economic future of the United States depends on our tradition of technological innovation, Representative Broun’s views are not in the national interest. For example, the Earth is simply not 9,000 years old… He is, by any measure, unqualified to make decisions about science, space, and technology.”
Bill Nye is right. Rep. Paul Broun is incompetent. Biblical creationism is not science; the Bible is not a source of scientific truth. The future of the United States must not be held hostage by religious zealots.
At Change.org you can sign a petition to remove Paul Broun from the House Science Committee.
Bill Nye is a respected science educator and television personality best known for his program, “Bill Nye the Science Guy.”
